Summer is most definitely here and for this week's menu we are celebrating English wine (both in menu and bottle), the sea and the season's best local produce. We've got an al-fresco-feast-worthy starter that's brilliant with a glass of Wharie's 'The White', a beaut of summery take on fish pie with the best British fish and a Pinot Noir foraged cherry dessert of dreams. We're showcasing 1 English white this week and we'd really implore you to add it to your order! Read on to hear all about it...

MENU 🐟

Norton & Yarrow make multi-award-winning cheese (Best British goat's cheese 2022) from their herd of Nubiyan goat's in Shillingford, just 3 miles from our kitchen. The curd is their 'pre-cheese' and is wonderfully fresh. We will whip it up to a lovely light texture and salt it for you to spread onto slices of our homemade hazlenut & raisin toast and dollops of chutney made with new season apricots and English Bacchus wine for floral lift. Exquisitely matched (if we say so ourselves!) with Wharie's 'The White' blend (add on for £18.5) which compliments the acidity in the whipped curd and and brings floral refreshment in spades.

Who doesn't love fish pie? There's nothing better in our opinion and this is our summery take on the classic. Chalk stream trout, Cornish Pollack and Atlantic prawns sit in an unctuous, velvety cheese sauce, hidden under fluffy mash that'll be topped with a crispy, crunchy cheese topping. Veggies get an-as-luxurious version, but packed with the last of the asparagus, nutty celeriac and garden peas. A warm courgette salad brings crunch and acidity and the salsa verde a herby lift. As with the starter, Wharie's 'The White' (£18.5) is a really lovely match, offering a fine balance between freshness and texture and fragrant fruit. 

Our chef Hazle has a huge cherry tree in her garden, with the fruits perfectly ripe for picking. We will hull them before lightly poaching in English Pinot Noir and aromats for you to serve with a fluffy amaretti fuelled mascarpone topped with shavings of dark chocolate. A fresh, summery dessert that's the perfect end to this English summer's feast. 

WINE 🐟 

 THE WHITE 2020, The Wharie Experience, Lymington, Hampshire, 11%

Guillaume Lagger is a Swiss winemaker who is producing some of England's most exciting wines from his small winery housed in the garage of his home near Lymington in the New Forest. Greg went to visit him in May (just before his Pinot Gris won the best English still wine at The Independent English Wine Awards!) and was blown away by the purity and the quality of his wines, bringing back a selection of his wines. 'The White' is a blend made from Anchor50% Chardonnay, 25% Pinot Gris and 25% Bacchus, from fruit Anchorsourced from vineyards in Sussex and Essex (as his young vines establish). Elderflower and cut grass abound and there is a slightly toasty edge from partial barrel ageing. Wharie is a winery to watch and we are proud to be have the opportunity to serve Guillame's wines to you. It's a brilliant pairing for the starter, bringing acidity and vibrancy and is SO wonderful with the fish pie. At £18.50 it's a steal for such a high quality, artisan wine made in tiny quantities.
